Birmingham-local Jack Tyler is a Project Scheduler on GL events UK’s Birmingham 2022 delivery team. With his friendly manner and willingness to help colleagues, it is no surprise to disclose that he is a valuable and popular member of the team.

Jack concisely describes his daily duties, “My main responsibilities include maintaining a robust scheduling management system, which involves co-ordinating and monitoring project timelines with internal departments and external stakeholders on a daily basis, to ensure key deliverables are achieved. Another part of my role is identifying risks at venues and highlighting these to relevant colleagues.”

Naturally, Birmingham 2022 has the ability to bring people together from across the globe and Jack is forthcoming in sharing his interpretation of the event. “The Games inspire, engage and connect athletes and communities, helping them to realise their full potential. In addition to this, it’s about ensuring Birmingham grows and succeeds as a city. From a social aspect, I think the Games has huge potential to help society understand where to invest resources back into local communities. Ultimately, the benefits extended to greater equality, mental wellbeing and environmental sustainability.”

After joining the team at GL events UK in September 2021, Jack spares no hesitation to highlight how this project has benefitted his life. “The Games has provided me with a real springboard for my career. To be part of a major global event from a Project Management and planning perspective, is a real career highlight.”

With this, Jack imparts commitment to delivering this project to the best of his ability alongside his colleagues. “Like many athletes, my goal is to succeed and achieve the objectives that are expected of me as a Scheduler. I believe that all the hard work and planning will be worth every single moment and I look forward to sharing my experience for a long time.”

Jack explains that the main challenges of his role stem from having to adapt to the events sector. “I’d simply say it’s managing the unknown. It’s been a challenge to determine the duration of important deliverables. Likewise, the variances in suppliers and contracted working hours have been a learning curve, but I quickly found my feet.”

As a Birmingham-born team member, Jack reflects on the importance and honour of hosting The Games in his hometown. “The best part of the project so far is being given the opportunity to make history for my local city. The fact that I’m able to learn from experienced professionals within the events industry and see a venue on paper slowly transform into reality, is a pleasure to be a part of. With an excellent team, I have no doubt that we can pull together to make the project a huge success – I’m really looking forward to the opening ceremony.”

Jack concludes by looking to future generations. “It’s amazing to think that young people could be inspired by our contributions to realise they could be involved in an event like this one day. It’s truly such an important project.”
